ALRA (the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts) recently held an “enjoyable and interesting” INSET weekend for drama teachers from across the UK. Presenting teachers with the opportunity to participate in a range of practical workshops designed specifically to explore different approaches and solutions to teaching drama in schools, this weekend was offered by ALRA completely free of charge.

This INSET weekend focused on what drama schools want from prospective students. To this end we spent the initial session of the weekend discussing drama schools in general, the audition process and the skills required of a student coming to drama school. The later sessions were more practical and consisted of workshops in movement, voice, approaching the text, games and audition technique. All the teachers participated in the sessions and many commented on their surprise at how physical all aspects of acting are.

GCSE and A Level english and drama teachers participated in this unique weekend and welcomed the chance to learn new and inspiring teaching methods. One teacher from Cheshire commented that:
“This weekend has introduced a range of new creative ideas and practical skills that have refreshed and inspired me - I have really taken a lot away from the course and am enthusiastically applying some of the exercises into the pupils work.

All classes throughout the weekend were taught by regular ALRA tutors and were supported by ALRA students.
