Man and woman write bad sex couple

John Updike and the Mayor of London’s sister have been recognised formally for their bad writing about sex.
The 16th annual Bad Sex in Fiction Award went to Rachel Johnson, for a passage from her book Shire Hell, while a Lifetime Achievement Award went to John Updike, whose The Widows of Eastwick earned him a fourth consecutive nomination. more

An offer to refuse

daggerCrime entries are invited for the 2008/2009 CWA Dagger awards. Any UK publisher may enter books for judging provided the book is relevant to the appropriate award and was published between June 1, 2008 and May 31, 2009.
There is no fee for submitting entries. However, it is a condition of entry that all publishers whose books appear on any of the Dagger shortlists agree to pay a contribution towards the CWA’s costs of running the awards. more

No payment to writers

strike signAmerican studios and networks are not complying with new media provisions of contract they agreed to nine months ago, according to a writers’ union. The Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW), which represents many of the writers involved, has filed for arbitration against the AMPTP companies Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers. here

penThe 12th Annual Brian Moore Short Story Award is accepting submissions in Belfast. Prizes: £750, £300, £200. Entry fee is £5, and in sterling only. Maximum word count is 2,000 words. Entrants must be of Irish descent, or resident in Northern Ireland and aged 18 years or more. more

Rossica Prize offers £5,000 between a publisher and translator

booksThe Rossica Prize aims to promote the best of Russian literary culture in the English-speaking world. It is awarded biennially for the best new translation of a high-quality Russian literary work into English. The £5,000 is divided between the translator and the publisher. more
